5 Techniques For Training Your Puppy

Think Positive

Fido does not get a halo. Thinking positive means rewarding behavior you like and not rewarding behavior you don’t like. Sounds simple enough. According to ASPCA you will hear a lot of advice ranging from bringing a strong hand to focusing on positive reinforcement. Staying positive may be a little more involved, but the end results can be extremely positive for you and your pooch. For more information on positive training visit the Humane Society.

Yay TREATS!!!

Dogs love good treats. This can be a great tool for training. Buy a rock climbing chalk bag at any local sports store. Then find a yummy treat for your puppy. This can be cheese, turkey, pet store treats, or pretty much anything your dog would love to eat. Break these treats into small pea-size pieces. When you grab your treat bag to start training your dog will go crazy with excitement for some good lesson time.

The Power of Sit

Properly used Sit Commands can improve your dog's overall behavior. This great article brings up 25 different times to use the sit command. This command can help your little one stop jumping on people, behave better on walks, and avoid getting over stimulated. Adding a hand gesture to the Sit Command will make life easier. Here is a great video on training a dog to sit.

Playing During Training

It can’t be all work and no fun…who likes that any way. Well your dog doesn’t either. Training should last for about 15 to 20 minutes. Try training your dog for 5-minutes then taking a break to play and have some fun. For puppies you may even decrease the interval to 3-minutes of training then playtime. This will help you dog both enjoy training and give them time to process the new information they have just learned.

Fetching the Fun Way

Fetch is a great way to exercise your dog while training them at the same time. The dog training from University Canine Learning Academy in Seattle, WA teaches that with a few simply steps your dog can fetch better. Here is a summary from their website:

1) When the ball comes out, your dog needs to sit. That sit should be an offered behavior, not a requested one. Once your dog sits, mark the behavior with a quick "YES" and throw the ball. (Be prepared to wait at this step)

2) Your dog needs to drop the ball upon her return. If you go to pick up the ball and your dog darts in to grab it, immediately stand up and ignore her.

3) If your dog jumps or whines, wait and ignore her. No eye contact, no "uh, uh." Both of those are attention and are rewarding to your dog. Offer her nothing until the quiet sit happens and then immediately mark it with "yes" and throw the ball.
