The gift of time is one of the most valuable assets for a nonprofit organization. Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter relies on volunteers to make sure the animals at the shelter get the best care possible.
Interested in volunteering? Here are the basics to getting started:
- Contact our Volunteer Manager; volunteer.faas@gmail.com / 510-337-8575; to sign up for an orientation.
June Orientations:
Sign ups for June orientations start on June 1st
• Thursday, June 6th at 5:30 pm
• Saturday, June 8th at 5:30 pm
- Take the orientation and appropriate corresponding training classes
- Must be able to make a minimum 6 month commitment of 2 hours per week
- Commit to a regular schedule for your volunteer duties
- Be 10 years or older (see Junior Volunteers, below)
FAAS has many great volunteer opportunities that make a huge difference for the animals:
Canine Support:
This position allows you to work in collaboration with other volunteers and staff to support the general care of the shelter canines, including cleaning, feeding, dog walks, and play time .
Feline Support:
Work with other volunteers and staff to clean, care and provide comfort and socialization skills to shelter cats.
Rabbit and Small Animal Support:
Work with other volunteers and staff to clean, care and provide comfort to these small pets.
Foster Care:
Under aged kittens or puppies or sick animals often need a home to offer care and socialization until they can be available for adoption.
Mobile Adoptions:
Take available shelter animals to local sites during the week or weekend for adoptions, and provide information about FAAS to the public.
Junior Volunteers:
Must be between 10 to 15 years old, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Junior Volunteers are not allowed into the kennel or walk a dog on a leash. For volunteers 16 and 17 years old, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during orientation but can volunteer on their own.
Other volunteer opportunities are available for those individuals who want to help, but not necessarily work with the animals. FAAS holds several events and fundraisers throughout the year, and always needs help with those. Office support is greatly appreciated by the staff, and our old shelter is always in need of handy people who love to fix things, do gardening, and general cleaning.
