The Betty White Challenge

We adored Betty White for many reasons, not least of them her passion for animals. She probably would have loved Twitter's support for her favorite cause on what would have been her 100th birthday. Here's to you, Betty!

A Life Well-Lived for Laughs - And Animals

By now you've probably heard of the Betty White Challenge, an online effort to get fans of the beloved comedy and animal welfare icon to donate $5 to an animal organization on Monday, Jan. 17, what would have been her 100th birthday.

Ms. White was known for her enduring love and support for all animals, whether homeless pets, zoo animals, or endangered species in the wild, and often joked that comedy was just a way to support her animal "habit." At one point her fur family included 26 dogs.

Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter welcomes with open arms almost 1,000 lost and abandoned pets a year, returning and rehoming more than 95%.

We salute all those with public platforms who use their popularity to make a positive difference in the lives of animals. Among her many other accomplishments, Ms. White surely was a friend to furred, feathered and finned creatures alike, and that makes her a hero to us!

"I learned it from my animal friends. Kindness and consideration of someone besides yourself. I think that keeps you feeling young." - Betty White

Consider joining the worldwide #bettywhitechallenge by making a donation to your favorite animal organization before midnight Monday, Jan. 17.
